Colombo is the modern face of Sri Lanka — a coastal capital where colonial arcades, sea-facing boulevards and contemporary design districts share the same skyline. For most travelers it is the first breath of the island, and a graceful one to begin with.
Set along a curving Indian Ocean shoreline, Colombo blends heritage neighbourhoods with a quietly confident luxury scene. Rooftop lounges look out over the port; heritage hotels open onto ministries and museums; and just beyond, the old Dutch canals and Cinnamon Gardens reveal a slower, more elegant side of the city.
Once a Portuguese trading post, then a Dutch fort, and later the seat of British Ceylon, Colombo has been shaped by five centuries of maritime trade. Traces of each era survive in the Old Parliament, the Wolvendaal Church and the arcades of Pettah — layered beside the mosques, kovils and temples of the city's living communities.
