Bentota is a resort coast in the best sense — quiet, walkable, endlessly scenic. The Bentota River offers a slower counterpoint to the beach: boat safaris drift through mangrove tunnels, monitor lizards sun on the banks, and kingfishers dart between the trees. Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga estate lies just upstream.
Bentota became Sri Lanka's first designated tourist resort in the 1960s, developed with the involvement of legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. His legacy still defines the region's most beautiful properties.
