AboutYala National Park
Yala is the finest wildlife park in Sri Lanka and one of the most rewarding leopard-viewing destinations in the world. Its arid plains, jungle pockets and lagoons shelter one of the highest densities of Panthera pardus kotiya anywhere on earth.
Covering nearly 1,000 square kilometres in the southeast, Yala unfolds as a patchwork of scrub jungle, coastal lagoons, granite outcrops and open plains. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and more than 200 bird species share the park — and its five blocks each have their own character. Private, expert-led safaris are the only way to truly experience it.
Yala was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and a national park in 1938 — one of the earliest in Asia. Its unique combination of dry-zone habitat and coastal ecosystems has since made it a global reference point for leopard research.

Best time to visit
February to July is the driest, most rewarding period, with animals concentrating around remaining waterholes. Block 1 typically closes in September for maintenance.
