In the northern summer, the east coast is where Sri Lanka's best beach travel happens.
Between May and September, when the south-west monsoon puts a damp curtain over the Galle-to-Tangalle coast, the finest beach weather in Sri Lanka moves to the east. This is the season for Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Uppuveli — long stretches of pale sand, warm glass-flat seas, and reef systems that welcome snorkellers as much as divers.
Trincomalee itself is a working harbour town with a striking Hindu temple on Swami Rock and a deep colonial history. Most travelers stay a short drive north, at Uppuveli or Nilaveli, where a small handful of boutique hotels and villas sit directly on the sand. Just offshore lies Pigeon Island — a national park with vibrant coral, reef sharks and turtles — reached by a five-minute boat ride and best snorkelled early morning.
Whale watching is possible here too, in the reverse season to Mirissa: April to July brings blue whales along the eastern shelf, with fewer boats and no crowds. Diving is superb: the wrecks of HMS Hermes and SS Athenic, and the reefs around Great Basses, all lie within reach.
Base yourself for three to five nights and combine with the Cultural Triangle for a summer-season itinerary that side-steps the wet coast entirely. It is a quieter, wilder and — for travelers who have already seen the south — a refreshingly different chapter of Sri Lanka.
