Beyond Mirissa and Unawatuna — the quieter coves we send our travelers to.
Mirissa and Unawatuna have their pleasures, but they are no longer secret, and both can feel busy in high season. Sri Lanka's coast is generous, and there are quieter alternatives at every point on the compass that reward a little seeking-out.
On the south coast, Tangalle is our first recommendation for real quiet: a wide arc of soft sand backed by low headlands, with a handful of exceptional boutique hotels and villas and a fraction of the crowd of the classic honeymoon towns. Talalla, a short drive west, is smaller still — a lovely stop for a couple of nights of hammock-and-book time. For a splash of activity, Weligama's long bay is Sri Lanka's beginner-surf capital, and the water is beautifully warm.
On the west coast, Kalpitiya is a very different proposition — long deserted beaches, superb kite-surfing between December and April, and the chance of dolphin pods offshore. Further south, Aluthgama and Bentota offer river-and-sea combinations that pair beautifully with a night on a converted rice-barge on the Madu Ganga.
On the east coast, in the northern summer, our favourites are Nilaveli and Uppuveli near Trincomalee, and the wilder stretches around Passikudah. Diving off Pigeon Island, snorkelling at Coral Cove and long empty morning walks — these are the small pleasures of the east coast in season.
