The Ideal Two-Week Sri Lanka Itinerary

How we'd shape a two-week private tour of Sri Lanka — start to finish.

Two weeks is the sweet spot for a Sri Lanka itinerary. Ten days feels a little compressed; three weeks starts to duplicate rather than deepen the experience. In fourteen days we can move a couple or family through every one of the great chapters of the island without ever rushing them.

We usually open with a night in Negombo — a short transfer from the airport, and a gentle re-set after the flight — then move north-east to spend three nights in the Cultural Triangle. Base in Sigiriya, climb it at sunrise, cycle through Polonnaruwa, and take a slow day at Dambulla and a spice garden. Then a scenic drive south to Kandy for one night and the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth.

The middle chapter is the hill country: three unhurried nights split between Nuwara Eliya or Hatton and Ella, with the blue-train ride between them and a proper tea-country afternoon in a working plantation. This is the coolest, quietest part of the trip, and travelers frequently ask afterwards for another night there.

We close with the south. A safari-and-beach combination works beautifully — one or two nights near Yala or Udawalawe, then five nights on the coast between Tangalle and Galle. The final night we like to spend inside Galle Fort itself, followed by a private morning walk on the ramparts before the drive back to Colombo. Everything on this itinerary — the pace, the properties, the small experiences — is fully bespoke; the framework is simply what we have found works best.
