What to Pack for Sri Lanka

Layers, sunblock, modest temple wear and reef-safe sunscreen — a practical packing list.

Sri Lanka is warm and humid at the coast, cool in the hills and demanding of a certain modesty at temples — a combination that catches many first-time travelers slightly off guard. The right packing is not much, but it is specific.

For the coast and lowlands, pack loose, breathable natural fabrics — linen shirts, cotton dresses, one or two swimsuits, a light sarong for the beach and for temple visits. Sandals and one pair of comfortable walking shoes are enough. Sunblock (reef-safe if you plan to snorkel), a wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses should not be an afterthought; the equatorial sun is stronger than it feels.

For the hills, add a warm layer — a fleece or a light down jacket — and a pair of long trousers for the evenings. Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Haputale can drop into single digits at night, and colonial bungalows are traditionally cool rather than heated.

For temples, both men and women should have shoulders and knees covered. A folded scarf in a day-bag solves this in a moment. Bring insect repellent, a small first-aid kit, and a refillable water bottle — we provide filtered water throughout the journey. Everything else — laundry, umbrellas, hair-dryers — is either provided or easily bought locally.
