How to Plan Your Sri Lanka Trip

A step-by-step guide to planning a private, tailor-made Sri Lanka journey.

The best Sri Lankan trips are planned personally, not templated. Here is the process we use with every traveler who comes to us — a short, honest guide to how a great itinerary comes together.

Start with the shape of the trip, not the details. How long can you travel for? What season do your dates fall into (this determines which coast you'll finish on)? Is the journey a honeymoon, a family holiday, a solo trip, a photography-led escape? These four questions shape everything that follows.

Next, choose your chapters. Almost every Sri Lanka itinerary contains three: culture, hills, coast. A shorter trip picks two chapters; a two-week trip includes all three; a longer trip adds a specialist chapter (deep wildlife, deep wellness, deep culinary). We build these chapters at a properly slow pace — two-night minimums almost everywhere, three where the location deserves it. Rushing between hotels ruins a trip faster than anything else.

Then, pick the hotels. This is where a specialist adds most value — knowing which of the tea-country bungalows suits your travel style, which of the Yala camps is best in June versus December, which of the Galle Fort villas has the balcony that faces the right way. Finally, add the small elevating experiences — a private ramparts dinner, a helicopter transfer, a temple visit with a scholar rather than a guide — and stitch the whole thing together with the right chauffeur.

One last step: leave room. Every itinerary we build reserves at least one unplanned day — a floating morning, an open afternoon — because the best moments on a Sri Lankan trip are almost never the ones you put on the calendar in advance.
