Our favourite walking-and-driving route through Sri Lanka's capital.
Most travelers arrive with a day or two in Colombo at either end of their journey — and rarely quite know what to do with it. This is our unhurried, curator's route through the city, designed to reveal Colombo's quiet elegance without the sightseeing checklist.
Begin with breakfast at your hotel, then a private walking tour of Fort with a heritage guide — from the Old Parliament and Cargills Building through the arcades of the Dutch Hospital to the Grand Oriental Hotel. Cross into Pettah for the sensory-overload markets, the Red Mosque and the Wolvendaal Church. Two hours here is enough; Pettah is intense.
Mid-morning, drive south along Galle Face to the Gangaramaya Temple and its floating twin, Seema Malaka, on Beira Lake — one of the loveliest quiet moments in the city. Lunch at a chef-led modern Sri Lankan restaurant (we have a shortlist of three or four we like) or at a small kaday for a proper rice-and-curry.
The afternoon belongs to shopping and design: hand-loomed textiles at Barefoot, tea at Dilmah's t-Lounge, tropical modernism at the Geoffrey Bawa city house (booking required). At sundown, a walk along Galle Face Green with fresh isso wadei from the street vendors, then a proper rooftop cocktail overlooking the port. Colombo, done at the right pace, is quietly one of the great capitals of tropical Asia.
