Horton Plains

The high plateau at the edge of the world

Overview

AboutHorton Plains

At more than 2,000 metres, Horton Plains is a wind-swept plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest — home to the dramatic viewpoint known as World's End, where the land falls away nearly a kilometre to the plains below.

The classic loop hike takes you across grassland streams, into pockets of ancient forest, and out to two great escarpments — Little World's End and World's End — before descending past the roar of Baker's Falls. In the early morning it is otherworldly; by mid-morning mist often rolls in.

Named after a 19th-century British governor, Horton Plains was declared a national park in 1988. Its unique high-altitude ecosystem is home to endemic species found nowhere else.
