Adam's Peak

A sacred summit and a pilgrim's dawn

Overview

AboutAdam's Peak

Rising to 2,243 metres above the western hill country, Adam's Peak — Sri Pada — is one of Asia's great pilgrimage summits. From December to May, tens of thousands ascend by night to reach its summit shrine at dawn.

The classic climb begins in the small town of Dalhousie in the small hours of the morning, following a lantern-lit stone path of some 5,500 steps to the summit. As the sky lightens, the mountain casts a perfect triangular shadow onto the clouds below — a sight that has drawn pilgrims for more than a thousand years.

The summit shrine holds a stone footprint venerated by Buddhists as that of the Buddha, by Hindus as Shiva's, by Muslims and Christians as Adam's. This shared reverence gives the mountain a spiritual weight unlike any other in the country.
